Frequently Asked Questions

How are 3-digit and 4-digit shorthand hex codes interpreted?+

Shorthand 3-digit hex codes like #F0A duplicate each character to form the 6-digit equivalent #FF00AA. In 4-digit hex codes like #F0A8, the fourth digit represents the alpha channel, expanding to #FF00AA88.

Why do some hex codes have 8 characters?+

An 8-character hex code (#RRGGBBAA) includes two trailing characters representing opacity. For instance, #00000080 represents black at approximately 50% opacity (128/255).
