COLOR THEORY REFERENCE

Understanding Digital Color Spaces & Encodings

1. RGB vs. sRGB vs. Hexadecimal

The RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color model is an additive system where light beams are combined to produce over 16.7 million distinct hues in standard 8-bit channels (\(256^3\)).

Hexadecimal color notation compresses these three 0–255 integer channels into base-16 strings (\(00\) to \(FF\)). A leading hash symbol guarantees CSS parser recognition.

2. Cylindrical Coordinates: HSL & HSV

Designed in the 1970s to align more intuitively with human visual perception, cylindrical models project RGB onto a radial color wheel where Hue (\(0^\circ\)–\(360^\circ\)) dictates pigment wavelength.

Saturation represents purity, while Lightness (HSL) or Value (HSV) defines the illumination intensity.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE & METHODOLOGY

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between HSL and HSV/HSB color spaces?+

While both color models use a 360° cylindrical hue circle, HSL stands for Hue, Saturation, and Lightness, where 100% lightness is pure white. HSV (or HSB) stands for Hue, Saturation, and Value/Brightness, where 100% value represents maximum pigment intensity, not white. HSL is typically used for CSS styling, while HSV is standard in digital painting and graphical design software.

How does 8-character HEX (#RRGGBBAA) work?+

Standard 6-character hex codes (#RRGGBB) define red, green, and blue channels using two hexadecimal digits each (00 to FF). An 8-character hex code appends two additional hex digits representing the alpha transparency channel, where 00 is completely transparent (0% opacity) and FF is completely opaque (100% opacity).

Can I edit any color field directly?+

Yes. Editing any input field—whether HEX, RGB, HSL, or HSV—will instantly recalculate all other formats simultaneously without needing to submit a form.
